What Makes Las Flores Community Garden So Special

Welcome to Las Flores Community Garden, a vibrant green space in the heart of Thousand Oaks where plants grow, pollinators thrive, and community comes to life. Since our founding, we’ve worked together to create a sustainable, inclusive garden that goes far beyond individual plots. From certified wildlife habitats to giving gardens, we are proud to be a model for what community gardening can be.

Here’s a look at what makes Las Flores such a unique and cherished place to grow.

Butterfly & Wildlife Habitat (Established 2015)

Certified by four national organizations, this peaceful section is a thriving refuge for butterflies, birds, and other wildlife. It’s designed to support native species and is a favorite spot for visitors who want to pause and connect with nature.

Pollinator Garden (Established 2020)

Buzzing with life, our Pollinator Garden supports bees, butterflies, and other vital pollinators. Filled with nectar-rich, pollinator-friendly plants, this area is both beautiful and essential for nearby crops—and it’s a great educational tool for the community.

Friendship & Memorial Garden (Eagle Scout Project, 2022)

Created as an Eagle Scout project, this special garden invites members to paint rocks in memory of loved ones—including pets—and place them around the space. It’s a heartfelt, creative tribute area that brings comfort, connection, and color.

Butterfly House (Eagle Scout Project, 2022)

Our enclosed Butterfly House offers a front-row seat to the life cycle of the Monarch butterfly. Visitors can observe eggs, caterpillars, chrysalises, and emerging butterflies in a safe, protected space—a rare, hands-on learning experience.

Cut Flower Garden (In Development)

Located just inside the main gate, this new garden-in-progress will feature seasonal blooms that members can cut and enjoy at home. It will add beauty and abundance to our shared space and offer another way to spread garden joy.

Herb Garden (Established 2010)

One of the garden’s original features, our communal Herb Garden is stocked with culinary favorites like rosemary, oregano, basil, and thyme. Members are welcome to harvest herbs as needed—no reservation required.

Owl Box (Established 2012)

Installed to naturally control pests like gophers, our Owl Box provides a home for barn owls. Even more exciting: a live camera feed will soon be added to our website so you can watch their nesting and breeding season unfold in real-time.

Giving Garden (Established 2021)

Everything grown in our Giving Garden is donated to the Westminster Free Clinic, which hosts a food distribution every Wednesday. It’s a true community effort—grown, harvested, and delivered by our volunteers to support neighbors in need.

Greenhouse (Established 2020)

Our greenhouse is a hub of early spring activity—used by members to start seeds for their own plots, and to grow plants for our annual Earth Day sale. It’s a vital resource for learning and productivity, especially during cooler months.

Easy Access U-Boxes (Established 2017)

Designed for individuals with disabilities or limited mobility, our U-shaped garden beds provide safe, comfortable access for all gardeners. With wide pathways and raised beds, these plots ensure that everyone can enjoy the healing power of gardening.
