Late-Summer Harvest & Planting for Fall

August is one of the most exciting (and sometimes overwhelming!) months in the garden. Our summer crops are at their peak—tomatoes are blushing on the vine, zucchini is growing faster than we can cook it, and peppers, beans, and melons are filling baskets everywhere. At the same time, it’s the perfect moment to start planning for the cooler days ahead.
Celebrate the Late-Summer Harvest
The heat may be intense, but this is when our summer gardens truly shine. Here’s what’s likely thriving now in Las Flores beds:
- Tomatoes – perfect for fresh salsa, roasting, or freezing for later.
- Zucchini & Squash – bake it into bread, grill it, or try spiralizing it as a pasta alternative.
- Peppers – from sweet bells to spicy jalapeños, these are hitting their stride.
- Cucumbers & Melons – refreshing snacks for hot days.
Tip: If you’ve got more produce than you can use, consider sharing it with neighbors or donating to local food programs. Our Giving Garden loves surplus contributions!
Time to Think Ahead: Fall Planting
While enjoying the abundance, it’s also time to get cool-season crops started. August is the sweet spot to sow seeds that will carry us into fall and even winter. Think about adding:
- Leafy Greens – kale, spinach, arugula, and lettuce.
- Root Vegetables – carrots, radishes, beets, and turnips.
- Brassicas – broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts.
These crops thrive as the temperatures cool, and planting them now ensures strong growth before the days shorten too much.
Quick Garden Chores for August
- Refresh mulch to help conserve water and keep roots cool.
- Keep an eye on irrigation systems—plants need consistent moisture in the heat.
- Pull out tired summer plants to make space for fall seedlings.
- Save seeds from your favorite summer crops for next year.
